According to the U.S. Pentagon, all Ukranian troops have now retreated out of Kyiv following a month-long fierce battle for the city.

In a briefing to the press on Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that: “According to U.S. intel, all Ukranian troops have now retreated out of Kyiv and withdrawn south along the Dnieper river.

On Sunday, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had announced that: “Russia was in full control of Kyiv.”

The Ukranian army has yet to make a statement on the matter. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted a video on Instagram from an unknown inside location urging his troops to fight on.

The news followes over a month of fierce fighting for every inch of the Ukranian Capital. According to British intel estimates, at least 5,000 Ukranian and 6,000 Russian soldiers have died in the battle for Kyiv. In addition, some 8,000 Ukranian troops were injured and some 10,000 captured according to Russian news-outlet TASS. Photos from the city show destroyed buildings and tanks moving through piles of rubble.

It is unclear how Ukranian forces will fight on from here. According to U.S. estimates, Ukraine has suffered some 23,000 casualities, to Russia’s 25,000. Some 15,000 Ukranian troops have also been captured.

The Ukranians are now facing an extremely difficult situation, being forced to defend the western part of the nation with few defendable positions. Some pundits believe Ukranian forces may retreat all the way to defend the western city of Lviv.
