Denver, CO – A 34-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with copyright infringement, following a joint operation by the Denver Police Department (DPD) and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.
The operation, which was launched in response to a tip from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), targeted an individual suspected of distributing large quantities of pirated movies, TV shows, and music online. After several months of surveillance and monitoring, DPD and ICE officers executed a search warrant at the woman’s residence, resulting in the seizure of 45 gigabytes of copyrighted material.
To put that in perspective, 45 gigabytes is equivalent to:
9,000 hours of music
1,500 hours of video footage
Enough data to fill over 9,000 CDs
The woman, who has not been named, is facing charges of copyright infringement and could face up to 5 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 if convicted.
The DPD and ICE are urging anyone with information about copyright infringement to come forward and report it to the authorities.
