Man, 20, shot and killed outside Weston Publix may have been mistaken identity

20-year-old black male, Joseph Pierre was killed in a Publix parking lot may have been mistaken for another person, prosecutors said in announcing the arrest of a suspect on April 16.

A 21-year-old black male, Darnell Butler was arrested and charged with 1st Degree Murder in the shooting death of Johnathan Lee, according to a press release from the Broward County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officers responding to a 9-1-1 call on April 22, 2021 found Joseph Pierre slumped unconscious behind the wheel of a car in Weston, near Promenade Blvd.

The officers and medical personnel performed life-saving measures on him before he was transported to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Investigations involving numerous interviews, led to the arrest, according to the release. Those interviews led investigators to a possible motive of mistaken identity, the release said.

The defendant is currently lodged in the Broward County Jail, Wayne Clark, pending a detention hearing, the release said.

After his death, Joseph Pierre’s organs were donated to the Miami Transplant Institute, the release said.
